The Alde & Ore Association
Alde Catchment Water Quality Group was founded in 2022 to gather weekly water quality data from the tidal and non-tidal River Alde and tributaries. We test for bacteria (E. Coli) and plant nutrients (nitrates and phosphates) from 13 locations to give both snapshot and seasonal trend data.
The aim of the study is to provide baseline data on the health of our river system with particular reference to contaminants added by human activity in the catchment area.
This data can help us understand the complex impact that human and animal inputs have on the river system and provide additional support to the Environment Agency in its task of pollution prevention.
Key benefits from this study:
– An opportunity to chart long-term changes in the river system, particularly (1) the improvements expected from updated waste water treatment plants at Benhall, Framlingham and Orford, and (2) implementation of agricultural nitrate inputs in the Nitrate Vulnerable Zone plans (NVZs are areas designated as being at risk from agricultural nitrate pollution).
– Providing an informed position in discussions with the Environment Agency, the regulated community and other organisations that have supported and encouraged our activities.
– A guide to water users on where and when river water quality may not be suitable for certain activities (e.g. swimming). Note – the data shows trends and does not provide real-time information on water quality.
