The Alde & Ore Association

Taking care of the
Alde & Ore Estuary

What we do

We undertake a wide range of activities aimed at preserving the natural beauty, heritage and biodiversity of the area and encouraging the responsible enjoyment of the rivers and landscapes.

We do this by:

  • campaigning for the upkeep of the sea and river defences that protect the area from catastrophic and irreversible damage of flooding

  • raising awareness of the area’s heritage and unique natural ecology

  • monitoring for man-made and natural threats to the fragile ecosystem including water monitoring

  • challenging planning applications and developments that will destroy or detract from this special area while supporting positive developments

  • commissioning studies and independent professional consultants to provide evidence of change, assess the potential impact of threats and inform the best course of action
  • making representation and contributing information to public inquiries and government consultations that affect the area

  • promoting responsible use and enjoyment of the rivers and surrounding landscapes, including sponsorship and operation  of the Butley Ferry and maintenance of footpaths

  • supporting conservation of the natural habitat while maintaining a balance with people’s use of the landscape

  • encourage a local economy working in harmony with nature

  • establishing partnerships and working with local organisations and national bodies that support our aims.
